Four titles in a row won't be easy for CC

Written by NATHAN BAIRD

Soon after celebrating their third straight undefeated state championship, Central Catholic's players realized how many of them won't be back next season.

The Knights could return 10 of the 22 starting spots from the Class A title victory against Scecina. That doesn't include junior offensive lineman Casey Bollock, who was injured late in the regular season and missed the state tournament.

However, among the departing are Purdue recruit Danny Anthrop, a two-way starter and special teams game-changer, two-year starting quarterback Austin Munn and the entire defensive line.

"It's hard to lose those guys because we've grown up playing with them for a while," junior fullback Brad Schrader said. "Next year, the upcoming senior class will have to take charge. They'll have to take care of business, too, and carry on the tradition."

No one can truly replace Anthrop, but CC coach Kevin O'Shea has spoken highly of sophomore wingback Joe Smith. He missed a large portion of the season due to injury.

The other wingback spot could also be vacated if Jake Churchill is moved to quarterback. But Schrader will be a third-year starter and could be featured more out of the backfield.

The new quarterback will inherit an established deep threat in Timmy Mills. Bollock, Matt Thieme and Patrick Mackey can all bring starting experience back to the offensive line. Whatever young players step up will have benefited from the extra practice and playing time the Knights earned by advancing deep in the state tournament.

"These extra practices do help," O'Shea said. "We're able to get a gauge on where we're at and where we might need to go."

The defense graduates six starters, and possibly loses a seventh if Churchill focuses on quarterback. But three starting juniors return at linebacker: leading tackler Ross Corcoran, Andrew Hubertz and Sam Kochert.

Another junior, Will Jones, started opposite Churchill at cornerback.

That 16-member junior class has never experienced a varsity football loss, which should provide plenty of offseason motivation. Another undefeated season, a tougher task than ever now that CC has returned to the Hoosier Conference, would extend the Knights' winning streak to 60 games and tie Bloomington's state record set from 1967-73.

"The classes before us really set the table," said Hubertz, who recalled that his last loss came as a freshman in a JV game against Roncalli. "We're kind of used to being (in the state finals) now. It's becoming a standard at CC, winning state championships."

Central Catholic seniors Jeff Adams and Danny Anthrop were named to the Indiana Football Coaches Association's Top 50 All-state team.

The list is comprised of players from all of the IHSAA's five football classes. Adams and Anthrop both recently helped Central Catholic win an unprecedented third straight undefeated Class A state championship.

Adams, a 6-foot, 290-pound right guard, blocked for an offense that averaged 210 rushing yards and 366 total yards per game.

Anthrop rushed for 1,757 yards and 32 touchdowns and totaled 834 yards and 13 touchdowns on 44 receptions. The Purdue recruit scored 51 total touchdowns.

Several other area seniors were named All-State in their respective classes, beginning with McCutcheon defensive lineman Brian Price in 5A. West Lafayette offensive lineman Baxter DeBruyn and defensive back Adam Folta, North Montgomery offensive lineman Josh Smith and Southmont defensive back Austin Burton were honored in 3A.

Football players boost CC past Harrison

Written by NATHAN BAIRD
For the first time this season, Central Catholic coach Dave Barrett started five members of the school's football team in Saturday's J&C Hoops Classic seventh-place game.

Some rustiness would have been excused for those Knights, who didn't achieve the required number of basketball practices until Friday. Yet CC guard Jake Churchill had no such concern regarding teammate Andrew Hubertz.

"He'd been making them all week in practice," Churchill said of the junior forward's outside shot. "There was no doubt in my mind he would come out and light it up for us."

Hubertz hit four 3-pointers in the second quarter en route to a game-high 21 points, and Central Catholic surged to a 73-46 victory over Harrison at Dennis Blind Gymnasium.

Hubertz's flurry came during a 20-3 Knights run in the second quarter, resulting in a double-digit lead that Central Catholic never relinquished.

A starting outside linebacker and receiver on CC's Class A championship football team, Hubertz said early morning shooting sessions with his brother, Will, helped him lock in his long-range touch.

"We wanted to get our offense going off of turnovers and rebounds," said Andrew Hubertz, who also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. "I got hot."

Harrison struggled early against Central Catholic's defensive pressure, committing six turnovers and missing two field goals over the first four minutes. Yet the Raiders still led 14-12 early in the second quarter.

But a 3-pointer by Timmy Mills followed by two from Hubertz shot Central Catholic into the lead. By the end of the half, the Knights led 36-20 and the Raiders were reeling.

Central Catholic opened the second half on an 11-0 run, which Harrison's Jacob Payne finally stopped with a basket with 1:24 left in the third quarter.

"We were in trouble long before (Hubertz) made a shot," Harrison coach Mark Rinehart said. "When a shot didn't go in for us in the first four minutes of the game, we lost all of our focus, all of our energy. It took until the middle of the third quarter before we could defend anybody."

Harrison turned the ball over 27 times, with several of those resulting in layups for Churchill (17 points) and Danny Anthrop (14 points). Cole Smith's 13 points and eight rebounds led the Raiders.

Central Catholic baseball on the horizon

We are etching ever so close to another Central Catholic baseball season here in Lafayette, IN. Practice is underway inside right now due to imperfect field conditions outside. My son Nick has been throwing during the offseason & doing some hitting with me every other weekend & at school. At my age, I can still barely throw batting practice to him. Two more summers & I will have an excuse not to throw to him anymore, he will have graduated. Not that I don't like it because I do enjoy every minute of it, what father wouldn't? In fact, when he moves on to his college playing days, I will still do it, I just might need a wheel chair to get to the mound & back. LOL

Nick's team is on back to back State Championship runs but I feel this year is going to be a tremendous challenge. CC has lost a ton of talent that took us to 2 straight titles. I have a ton of confidence in our coaching staff to get us prepared once again though. The 1st scrimmage is March 24th against Brebuef. We then play a 4A State Champion team out of Wisconsin called Catholic Central, the same team name only turned around. LOL Catholic Central has won 2 of the past 3 state titles in WI in Div4. We are on back to back & 3 out of the past 4. This could be war!!!

This game is Saturday April 2, at Lafayette Central Catholic 1:00pm!!! Be There!!!

CC Hurdler On Tosh.0

YouTube hurdlers race to fame on Comedy Central

By JUSTIN L. MACK • jmack@jconline.com • February 23, 2011
In 2006, two Greater Lafayette girls struggled to finish a junior high hurdles race, falling several times and showing visible signs of fatigue along the way.

Five years and more than 1 million YouTube hits later, the pair was given a national stage to finally determine who deserves the title of worst hurdler ever.

Alexis Patzschke and Natasha Burns, both 18, became YouTube stars last year thanks to "Alexis Courage," a clip filmed by Patzschke's dad, Jay, that went viral late last year. It shows the girls stumbling and knocking over hurdles long after others had finished the race.

The video became so popular that the girls were flown to Los Angeles to be a part of a segment on "Tosh.0" -- a television show on Comedy Central that features funnyman Daniel Tosh commenting on the Internet's most talked-about clips.

The stars of the clip, who met for the first time for the trip, said they are having a blast with all the attention, and they are now looking back and laughing at the once embarrassing track meet.

"I think it's really exciting and cool," said Alexis Patzschke, who joined Burns, friends and family at The Other Pub in Lafayette Tuesday night for a Tosh.0 viewing. "A lot of people thought it was motivating."

The Original Video!!!

Burns, who learned of her inclusion in the video only a week before heading to film Tosh.0, said the response was surprising.

"It's like I got this attention for being a klutz," she said. "For being clumsy, we got paid and we got to be on TV. It's been great."

Tosh used the girls' video as the starting point for what he called his first ever "web rematch" segment. It started with a mock press conference -- with him as the only reporter -- and a pre-race hurdle training program that had the two girls emulating the retro "Donkey Kong" video game, complete with arcade sound effects.

Central Catholic shooters overcome Rensselaer

STAFF REPORTS • February 16, 2011

Haan dropped in five 3s on his way to a team-high 21 points. Christopher finished with 17.

Rensselaer 6-foot-10 center Ben Davisson led all scorers with 22 points but he also made the Bombers' only two free throws of the game. A total of 15 fouls were called, with CC going 3 of 4 at the line to Rensselaer's 2 of 11.

Playing without Jake Churchill, who missed the game because of illiness, the Knights (13-5) received offensive support from Hayden Gloyeske and Austin Munn with 11 points apiece and eight from Andrew Hubertz.

CC over Benton Central

By CLYDE HUGHES • For the Journal & Courier • January 15, 2011
Central Catholic broke free from Benton Central with a 17-3 run to open the third quarter and raced to a 76-44 victory at McHale Gymnasium Friday night.

The Knights, who hadn't won a game by more than 10 points this season, led 34-23 at halftime before putting the game away. CC forced five Bison turnovers during the first three minutes of the third quarter.

"We practice our pressure and press every day, so we really wanted to do that to start the second half," said the Knights' Brett Haan, who led all scorers with 16 points. "We pressured them and we were able to get some steals and layups and that seemed to open the game wide open for us."

The Bison could not get any closer than 18 points after the big CC run.

Benton Central had proven resilient in the first half. The Bison spotted the Knights 13 points to open the first quarter but chipped away at the lead, getting it down to 16-12 on a John O'Malley layup.Haan converted a three-point play and Nick Hilligoss added a free throw to give the Knights a 20-12 edge after the first quarter.

"We jumped on them pretty early, but I think we let up and they created some turnovers," Central Catholic coach Dave Barrett said. "Benton Central hit some shots and did a nice job getting back into the ballgame."

A Brandon Rooze jumper and 3-point shot, sandwiched around a Jordan Johnson free throw, to open the second quarter got the Bison within 20-18 with 5:24 remaining.

Central Catholic forced five Benton Central turnovers on the Bison's next six possessions to slow BC's momentum.

Jake Churchill and Matt Burks connected on 3-point shots while Haan added a jumper and two free throws to push the Knights' lead back to double digits. Churchill, inserted into the starting lineup by Barrett, finished with 15 points.

"The team was playing good defense and they were able to get the ball out to me on the fast break," Churchill said. "I got most of my points because we were playing such good defense."

Benton Central managed to initially show down Haan with a box-and-one defense.

"In the first half, they wanted to see if our other players could score," Haan said. "Toward the end of the first half, we started to hit more shots and that started to free me up."

Benton Central coach Kyle Rule said the Bison suffered the same problems that led to their previous 10 losses: failing to maintain momentum offensively, turnovers and rebounding. Central Catholic outrebounded BC 39-21.

"I think they had as many offensive rebounds as we had all together," Rule said. "I know I'm sounding like a broken record, but it's the same things that have been killing us all year. Until we get those things fixed, it's going to be a struggle to get a win."

Johnson knocked down four 3-point shots and finished with 14 points.

"That's the Jordan Johnson we expected to count on this season," Rule said. "He got off to a slow start because he hurt his ankle and missed a game. In these last two games he's playing like he's capable of playing. He's got more confidence and he's knocking shots down."
