Central Catholic baseball on the horizon

We are etching ever so close to another Central Catholic baseball season here in Lafayette, IN. Practice is underway inside right now due to imperfect field conditions outside. My son Nick has been throwing during the offseason & doing some hitting with me every other weekend & at school. At my age, I can still barely throw batting practice to him. Two more summers & I will have an excuse not to throw to him anymore, he will have graduated. Not that I don't like it because I do enjoy every minute of it, what father wouldn't? In fact, when he moves on to his college playing days, I will still do it, I just might need a wheel chair to get to the mound & back. LOL

Nick's team is on back to back State Championship runs but I feel this year is going to be a tremendous challenge. CC has lost a ton of talent that took us to 2 straight titles. I have a ton of confidence in our coaching staff to get us prepared once again though. The 1st scrimmage is March 24th against Brebuef. We then play a 4A State Champion team out of Wisconsin called Catholic Central, the same team name only turned around. LOL Catholic Central has won 2 of the past 3 state titles in WI in Div4. We are on back to back & 3 out of the past 4. This could be war!!!

FLORA -- Brett Haan's 29 points and 10 rebounds led Class A No. 4 Central Catholic to a 68-53 victory over Carroll at Memorial Gymnasium on Friday.

The Knights (16-5) won the outright Hoosier Heartland Conference championship and ran their conference winning streak to 21 games. Central Catholic, which will join the Hoosier Conference next season, has won or shared six straight HHC titles.Eric Miller's 11 points and 12 rebounds led the Cougars (11-9), who were trying to earn a share of the conference title. This was the fourth straight season in which Carroll
lost the regular-season finale to CC with a chance to share the league crown.

YouTube hurdlers race to fame on Comedy Central

In 2006, two Greater Lafayette girls struggled to finish a junior high hurdles race, falling several times and showing visible signs of fatigue along the way.

Five years and more than 1 million YouTube hits later, the pair was given a national stage to finally determine who deserves the title of worst hurdler ever.

Alexis Patzschke and Natasha Burns, both 18, became YouTube stars last year thanks to "Alexis Courage," a clip filmed by Patzschke's dad, Jay, that went viral late last year. It shows the girls stumbling and knocking over hurdles long after others had finished the race.

The video became so popular that the girls were flown to Los Angeles to be a part of a segment on "Tosh.0" -- a television show on Comedy Central that features funnyman Daniel Tosh commenting on the Internet's most talked-about clips.

The stars of the clip, who met for the first time for the trip, said they are having a blast with all the attention, and they are now looking back and laughing at the once embarrassing track meet.

"I think it's really exciting and cool," said Alexis Patzschke, who joined Burns, friends and family at The Other Pub in Lafayette Tuesday night for a Tosh.0 viewing. "A lot of people thought it was motivating."

Burns, who learned of her inclusion in the video only a week before heading to film Tosh.0, said the response was surprising.

"It's like I got this attention for being a klutz," she said. "For being clumsy, we got paid and we got to be on TV. It's been great."

Tosh used the girls' video as the starting point for what he called his first ever "web rematch" segment. It started with a mock press conference -- with him as the only reporter -- and a pre-race hurdle training program that had the two girls emulating the retro "Donkey Kong" video game, complete with arcade sound effects.

Central Catholic shooters overcome Rensselaer

RENSSELAER -- Brett Haan and Cody Christopher helped Class A No. 4 Central Catholic negate Rensselaer's height advantage inside by sinking eight 3-pointers in the Knights' 70-51 boys basketball victory Tuesday night.

Haan dropped in five 3s on his way to a team-high 21 points. Christopher finished with 17.

Rensselaer 6-foot-10 center Ben Davisson led all scorers with 22 points but he also made the Bombers' only two free throws of the game. A total of 15 fouls were called, with CC going 3 of 4 at the line to Rensselaer's 2 of 11.

Playing without Jake Churchill, who missed the game because of illiness, the Knights (13-5) received offensive support from Hayden Gloyeske and Austin Munn with 11 points apiece and eight from Andrew Hubertz.
