Central Catholic rides Hubertz's hot hand past Guerin

(By Sam King) The separation between Andrew Hubertz and Guerin defenders was miniscule, but it was enough.The visiting Eagles threatened to run away from CC multiple times Thursday night, and seemingly every time the Knights needed a lift, Hubertz would come off a screen, step back and bury a 3-pointer.

Hubertz made 7 of 11 from the 3-point line and Jake Churchill and Mitch Witteveen provided big shots near the end of CC’s come-from-behind 57-55 victory over 3A No. 10 Guerin at McHale Gymnasium. It marks the second year in a row the Knights have hoisted the Bishop’s Cup traveling trophy.

“We saw them both games last weekend (against West Lafayette and Harrison) and they shot crappy,” Guerin coach Pete Smith said. “I knew they were due to hit some shots, but we didn’t defend very well. We went behind screens all night.”

Hubertz did the damage to keep the Knights afloat, then Witteveen’s 3-pointer with 2:51 remaining and Churchill’s fadeaway jumper with 1:30 to go provided the late-game boost to get CC over the hump in a must-win game.

Witteveen hit the first of two free throws with 32.5 seconds left, giving the Knights their final point, and Guerin senior Tyler Vickery missed a contested 3-pointer at the buzzer.

“Last week was tough, losing two to county rivals in close games that we could have won,” CC coach Dave Barrett said. “We really struggled in practice this week. Our morale was down a little bit. They just showed up tonight. 

They worked hard, they played hard and good things happened.”
CC (9-8) trailed by as many as 11 in the first half, but cut the deficit to 32-27 by halftime thanks to 15 points from Hubertz. Guerin’s Whit Rapp missed a layup at the buzzer of the first half.

CC entered the game shooting 31.5 percent from the 3-point line this season. Hubertz’s big night helped the Knights sink 11 of 21 against the defending Class 3A state champions.
“It feels good to come out and shoot like that, especially against a tough team,” Hubertz said.

Aaron Brennan led the Eagles (15-5) with 19 points and seven rebounds. Cris Burrough added 11 points and eight rebounds and Matt Labus scored 10, including seven in the first quarter.

Vickery’s steal and basket with 3:10 to go gave Guerin a 53-50 lead. Witteveen’s first basket of the night was his 3-pointer that tied the game with 2:51 to go and, after Burrough’s putback gave Guerin the lead again, Churchill scored in the paint on a jumper for the final lead change. Churchill finished with 14 points.
Smith said his defense was trying to take opportunities away from Hubertz, giving Witteveen an open look at the basket. Witteveen was 0 for 2 prior to tying the game.

“I wasn’t making prior shots, but I felt confident in the last minute or two,” said Witteveen, who also had seven assists. “I knew I had the open shot coming off the screen and Churchill found me, and I had confidence and I put it in.”
